Accelerating sustainable air transport in Sweden and Norway

Swedavia, at the forefront of innovation, is leading a transformative initiative together with Airbus, Avinor, SAS and Vattenfall to drive the development of hydrogen-powered aviation in Sweden and Norway. This joint effort marks a decisive step towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly future for aviation in the Nordic region.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Swedavia and its respected partners commit to building hydrogen aviation infrastructure at airports in Sweden and Norway. The collaboration includes key elements such as production, transportation, storage and refueling at commercial airports.

The main objective is to conduct a preliminary study on hydrogen and create a roadmap for the potential introduction of hydrogen-powered aviation in both countries. The partners aim to achieve commercial viability of larger hydrogen aircraft by 2035. The feasibility study, which will take one year to complete, will examine critical aspects such as the speed of hydrogen aviation development and the volumes of hydrogen required for storage at airports.

Hydrogen as the key to CO2 reduction in the Nordic region

The use of hydrogen, in conjunction with bio-fuels and battery electric aircraft, is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the aviation sector. This ambitious initiative, covering more than 50 airports, represents a ground-breaking feasibility study on hydrogen infrastructure for aviation in two countries.

As a leading airport operator, Swedavia is committed to continuously adapting airports to fossil-free aviation. Initiatives such as the installation of charging stations for electric aircraft underline Swedavia's commitment to a sustainable aviation future. Hydrogen plays a crucial role in Swedavia's climate transition strategy, as it produces zero carbon dioxide emissions when using renewable electricity.

Swedavia's leadership in this Nordic collaboration marks a significant step towards fossil-free aviation in the region. The partnership brings together expertise along the entire aviation value chain.
