Vienna and Tromsø at the centre of Rovaniemi's tourism boom

Finavia's Rovaniemi Airport welcomed four new international routes on 2 December, marking a notable milestone for the thriving travel season in Lapland. These routes, introduced by Finnair, Iberia, Vueling and Austrian Airlines, represent a significant part of Rovaniemi's fresh winter connections and contribute to the region's thriving tourism industry.

On this festive December day, there was an atmosphere of new beginnings at Rovaniemi Airport. Finnair opened a route to Tromsø in northern Norway, Austrian Airlines connected with Vienna, Vueling set course for Barcelona, while Iberia established a route to Madrid.

Finnair will fly from Rovaniemi to Tromsø on Thursdays and Saturdays from 02.12.2023 - 30.03.2024. Austrian Airlines connects Vienna with Rovaniemi from 02.12.2023 - 16.03.2024 on Saturdays.

Petri Vuori, Senior Vice President for Route Development at Finavia, emphasises: "These new routes underline the appeal of Lapland and the joint efforts with our partners to improve Finland's accessibility. This winter, Rovaniemi Airport has 13 completely new routes across Europe. With a total of 24 direct international connections and an estimated 700,000 return seats offered by airlines for Rovaniemi flights, accessibility is reaching new heights."

Sanna Kärkkäinen, Managing Director of Visit Rovaniemi, expects the biggest winter season in Rovaniemi's tourism history and predicts an increase in overnight stays of more than 10% compared to last year. She attributes this growth to extensive route development efforts that build on the region's attractive and high-quality tourism offer. The influx of almost 75,000 tourists to Rovaniemi's winter ambience is made possible by the record-breaking coverage of new routes launched on the busy 2 December, taking the region into its busiest season with numerous daily flights.

Lapland, consisting of Finavia Lapland Airports Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Ivalo and Kuusamo, is now more accessible than ever before. This winter, 20 new routes from Europe, including a total of 37 direct international routes, will connect travellers to enchanting Lapland.
