Helsinki Airport honored as one of the most beautiful airports in the world

Finavia's Helsinki Airport was honoured as one of the world's most breathtaking airports in the prestigious Prix Versailles 2023 architecture and design competition. The selection criteria emphasised environmental friendliness and respect for local natural and cultural heritage in the design.

Ulla Serlenius, Vice President of Helsinki Airport at Finavia, expressed her pride in the global recognition of Finnish architecture and design at the airport. As the first point of contact with Finland for many passengers, the airport represents the country's expertise and innovation and promotes a positive image of Finland.

The renowned Prix Versailles architecture competition, which is held annually, introduced the category of the most beautiful airports for the first time. The assessment focussed on innovation, creativity, consideration of the local natural and cultural heritage in the design and environmental friendliness. Helsinki Airport previously received an award for its terminal interior design in last year's competition.

The design and realisation of Helsinki Airport's new terminal was guided by a commitment to Finnish identity and sustainable choices. The focus was on the use of local materials, energy-efficient solutions and minimising the carbon footprint of the construction.

"The interior design of the terminal draws its inspiration from Finnish nature. The Luoto green structure of the arrivals hall warmly welcomes travellers to Finland, while the calm wooden ceiling of the departures hall, made entirely of Finnish spruce, creates a relaxing atmosphere for their journey," adds Serlenius.

The terminal expansion, which was introduced in 2021 as part of Helsinki Airport's extensive development programme, was successfully completed in autumn 2023 under the management of Finavia.
