Prime Minister opens the 169th edition of the market in the World Heritage City of Røros

The Rørosmartnan winter market, which takes place annually in the picturesque mining town of Røros in Norway, is a fascinating event. It combines historical traditions with modern life. The town, which is a World Heritage Site, undergoes a vibrant transformation during the five-day market. This year's market was ceremoniously opened on February 20 by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The roots of Rørosmartnan go back to 1854, when a royal decree announced that an annual market should be held in Røros. The market is not only a venue for trade, but also an important cultural event. This year, more than 80 historic horse-drawn sleighs from various regions came to Røros. They were once used to transport food and goods over the mountains.

The winter fair attracts around 70,000 visitors every year and transforms Røros into a lively marketplace with over 250 exhibitors. The atmosphere is characterized by lively street and nightlife.

In his opening speech, Prime Minister Støre emphasized the importance of "K", from copper to culture. The event not only celebrates the past, but also helps to promote local culture and economy.

Norway is supporting the maintenance of its eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Røros, with grants totaling NOK 52.2 million for the years 2024 and 2025. Bryggen in Bergen will receive the highest grant, followed by Røros Bergstad and Circumferensen.
