Lerøy Aurora AS in Norway may publicly present the Aurora Salmon Centre in Sør-Varanger

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries in Norway has granted permission to open the Aurora Salmon Centre in Sør-Varanger to the public. This is the northernmost aquaculture exhibition in the world.

The Norwegian Fisheries Authority had originally rejected Lerøy Aurora AS's application to establish a visitor centre. The reason given was that the company's sites in Varangerfjord were too far away from Kirkenes to organise excursions that could be approved. The visitor centre not only allows boat trips to an offshore aquaculture facility and an onshore processing plant, but also offers exhibitions in the tour centre itself. The visit to the exhibition takes about 60 minutes, while three to four hours should be planned for the comprehensive tour of the offshore facility and the onshore processing plant.

Lerøy Aurora AS' appeal was accepted by the Ministry of Trade and Fisheries and the decision of the Fisheries Board was revised. Lerøy Aurora is now granted a survey permit for the next ten years.

With the Barents Salmon Centre, Lerøy Aurora invites the public to gain insights into the industry. Here, visitors have the opportunity to get a closer look at modern Norwegian salmon aquaculture. To promote the public's knowledge of aquaculture, the Fisheries Agency has the power to issue permits for exhibitions. These permits, which are free of charge, allow salmon, trout and rainbow trout to be reared for exhibition purposes.
