F&B@Sea Award 2025 honors Hurtigruten for outstanding food concept at sea

At this year’s F&B@Sea Awards 2025, held as part of Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, Hurtigruten received the prestigious award for “Most Sustainable F&B Programme.” This international recognition honors cruise lines that set new standards in environmentally responsible onboard gastronomy.

Sustainability from sourcing to plate

The jury was particularly impressed by Hurtigruten’s holistic approach to integrating sustainability throughout its food service operations. From regional sourcing to waste reduction, the company delivers on its commitment to conscious dining at sea.

“Sustainability isn’t a trend for us – it’s a promise to our guests, partners, and the nature of Norway,” says the company.

A key part of Hurtigruten’s food concept is close collaboration with local suppliers along the Norwegian coast. More than 80% of all food served onboard comes from Norwegian producers, supporting the local economy and ensuring fresh, authentic ingredients with minimal transport distances.

Dramatic reduction in food waste

Thanks to digital tools and optimized processes, Hurtigruten has significantly reduced food waste per guest—from 261 grams in 2019 to just 66 grams in 2023. This achievement demonstrates measurable progress both ecologically and economically.

Pioneer in eliminating single-use plastics

Back in 2018, Hurtigruten became the first cruise line to completely eliminate single-use plastic in its food service operations—a pioneering move now followed by many in the industry. Today, the company relies on reusable and biodegradable materials across all gastronomic areas.

Strict standards for partners

Hurtigruten works exclusively with suppliers who meet strict environmental and ethical standards. Transparent supply chains and certified sources are fundamental requirements for collaboration.

By winning the award for the most sustainable F&B program at sea, Hurtigruten reinforces its position as a leader in eco-conscious cruise tourism. The Norwegian company demonstrates how culinary quality, regional identity, and sustainability can successfully go hand in hand—setting an example that resonates far beyond Norway’s coastline.
