Safety measures and monitoring after ongoing earthquake in Iceland

Due to an ongoing series of earthquakes and the possible prospect of a volcanic eruption, one of Iceland's biggest tourist attractions has been temporarily closed. The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal pool south-west of Reykjavik, will remain closed until next Thursday.

The decision was taken to ensure the quality of the visitor experience, which has been affected by the earthquakes. It is also intended to protect employees. Over the next few days, seismic activity will be closely monitored and the situation will be reassessed accordingly.

The "Blue Lagoon" is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 40 kilometres from Reykjavik. A new series of earthquakes with thousands of tremors began on the peninsula at the end of October.

According to the Icelandic weather authority, there were again hundreds of quakes in the region on Thursday night, including several with a magnitude of over 4.0 and one that almost reached magnitude 5.0. However, it remains unclear whether this is another sign of an eruption.
