SJ will start operation of night trains to Swedish Lapland again

The Swedish railway company SJ will take over the night train service between Stockholm and Luleå and on to Narvik in Norway from mid-December 2024. The takeover of the routes was caused by many disagreements and problems with the previous operator, the Norwegian railway company Vy Tåg.

Also the routes covered by Norrtågstrafiken will no longer be operated by Vy Tåg in the future. They will be taken over by the Finnish VR Group from December 2025.

SJ had already operated the night trains on this route between 2008 and 2020. However, the Swedish transport authority Trafikverket, which is responsible for the country's infrastructure, has limited SJ's current contract to one year, with the option to extend it for another year.
