Finavia promotes sustainable travel: Kittilä and Rovaniemi airports awarded label

To promote sustainable travel, Visit Finland has developed the Sustainable Travel Finland programme and label for tourism businesses and destinations. Kittilä Airport received the label in summer 2022, and Rovaniemi Airport was recently awarded it.

The main goal of Finavia's sustainability programme is to reduce airports' carbon emissions to zero by the end of 2025. Four carbon neutral airports in Lapland, namely Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Ivalo and Kuusamo will achieve net zero emissions this year.

At net zero, a few percentage points of carbon emissions remain. To neutralise these, Finavia participates in projects that capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Finavia's projects meet the criteria of the international Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme.

"Lapland's carbon neutral airports are a gateway to Nordic experiences. Our aim is to provide seamless connections to the destinations passengers love. The Sustainable Travel Finland label signals sustainable activities to international travellers and our stakeholders. Next, we are aiming for the label also for Ivalo Airport, which is known as the northernmost airport in Finland," says Jonna Pietilä, VP Lapland Airports at Finavia.
