Fjord1 and Statens vegvesen sign contract for the world's first self-driving ferry service in Norway

Fjord1 and Statens vegvesen sign a contract for the world's first self-driving ferry service. The Lavik-Oppedal route will be served by four autonomously operated vessels from 2026 to 2034, with an option to extend for up to three years. The contract was awarded in the fall due to the best combination of price and quality. Norway's ninth largest ferry route will introduce fully automated solutions for all four ferries from 2027.

The contract includes the automation of 23 different functions, as well as the establishment of a control center on land for monitoring and remote control of the ferries.

The four new zero-emission vessels have a capacity of 120 vehicles per ferry and will enable more frequent departures.
