Landslide on the E6 in Sweden

In western Sweden, an unexpected landslide destroyed a section of the E6 Sweden-Norway Highway, making an important link in the region impassable for several months.

The incident occurred near the small town of Stenungsund and led to the collapse of parts of the highway. Reconstruction is expected to take several months, authorities estimate. Police have cordoned off a large area of the affected area.

Experts are now investigating the causes of the incident, which may be linked to persistent rain and the fragile clay soil in the region.

The E6 is a major road in Scandinavia, stretching thousands of kilometres from the far north of the region through Norway to the southern Swedish port city of Trelleborg, from where Baltic ferries run to Rostock and Travemünde. Stenungsund is located about 40 kilometres north of Gothenburg in western Sweden. Traffic in the affected region is now being diverted via secondary roads, which also affects travellers. Longer journey times must be expected.
