Pyhä in Finnish Lapland
Pyhä is ideally located in the middle of Finnish Lapland, in the Pelkosenniemi municipality, and is a small all-year-round destination for active travellers who seek to discover nature. Here you can enjoy space, silence, and untouched nature just a stone's throw away.
The destination attracts with its proximity to the Pyhä Luosto National Park. It also actively promotes sustainability and local small businesses. There are several trail networks for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and biking. Also, the destination is known for the Pyhä ski resort, Pyhäkuru Adventure park, Lampivaara Amethyst mine, Pyhä-Luosto National Park (with several beautiful individual nature destinations inside the park), and the Visitor Centre Naava.
Pyhä is an abbreviation for the Pyhätunturi mountain. Pyhätunturi is located within two municipalities: Pelkosenniemi and Kemijärvi. The nearest airport is Rovaniemi, which is 1 h 45 minutes away by car. The nearest train stations are in Rovaniemi and Kemijärvi. Both the airport and the train station are easily accessible by bus. Pyhä is easy to access, whether you drive or take public transportation.
Luosto is a small and authentic Lappish neighbour resort to Pyhä, located only 20 minutes car ride away. These two resorts are connected by Pyhä-Luosto national park, so you can hike or ski from one resort to another. Read more about the highlights of Pyhä and Luosto below.

Summer highlights in Pyhä
The heart of Pyhä is the Pyhä-Luosto National Park, which is one of the oldest national parks in Finland. Pyhä-Luosto National Park is well-known for its geology, gorges, wetlands and up to 400-year-old forest. With direct access straight from the accommodation, the national park is a superb destination for day trips and short hikes all year round. Visitor Centre Naava in Pyhä has an interesting free exhibition of the surrounding nature.

Embark on an amazing rock adventure! Pyhäkuru Rock Adventure Park offers amazing experiences for all kinds of adventurers. Climb up the steep rock wall, explore the ancient rock formations, cross the gorge on a rope bridge, glide from wall to wall and enjoy the stunning scenery. In total of four different, varying routes (4th route will be ready in 2023) and several ziplines. The minimum height requirements for the courses is 120cm! Persons under 18 years must have a guardian's permit for the adventure, and persons under 15 years need to be accompanied by an adult.

PyhäExpress, 6-seater chairlift is a fast and comfortable way to get up on top of the fell even during summer time. The top offers a lot of things to see and experience. Hop on the chairlift, breathe in the vast natural scenery and let your eye explore the wilderness of Finnish Lapland. A trip to Pyhä is not complete if you haven’t seen the vistas from the top of the fell, right next to Pyhä-Luosto National Park.

The clear-water Pyhäjärvi is located only few kilometers from Pyhä centre. The 3.5 km long 248 ha spring lake is less than 1 km at its widest point and about 20 m deep. Historically, Lake Pyhäjärvi is known as a fishing vendace. Besides the year round fishing culture, the lake is also very suitable for soft water activities like canoeing and SUP-boarding during summer.

Winter highlights in Pyhä
Admire the deep gorges slicing through ancient rugged hills, the age-old forests and windswept treeless fell-tops. During winter, you can enjoy Lapland's big skies, lit by the Northern Lights. The national park's mascot is a friendly Siberian jay, that appears from the woods as if by magic when hikers stop for a picnic. Pyhä-Luosto national park was once inhabitant by Forest Sámi people and many place names in the national park still reminds us about their sacred places. During winter, the national park has trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoe hikes and winter biking. Also, back-country skiing is a popular activity, but it is recommended to do this activity guided with Pyhä ski school.

Pyha ski resort is located in a very attractive geographic area. The first National Park in Finland was founded here in 1936. Today, the slopes and lifts are situated just next to the Pyhä-Luosto national park.
For skiing and snowboarding, there are 14 slopes, varying lengths 65-1800 m. Elevation being 280 meters. In total, the ski area has 9 lifts. Besides the well groomed slopes, Pyhä offers the finest free riding opportunities in Finland for both beginners and well-experienced riders. Pyhä Ski Resort has been a pioneer of sustainable tourism since the 1990s, when the company was one of the first Finnish companies in the tourist industry to participate in the pilot projects of sustainable tourism arranged by Matkailun edistämiskeskus, the predecessor of Visit Finland. Their environmental program was first introduced together with a sister resort in Ruka in 2008. In 2019, they upgraded the environmental program to a responsibility program that includes social and economic aspects as well. The goal of Pyhä Ski Resort is to be the cleanest ski resort in the world.

Exciting and unique activity in Luosto, Lapland. Ride to the top of the Lampivaara fell and dig for your very own lucky Lappish gem!
You will ride to the Amethyst mine with a powerful, electrically assisted fatbike. Bliss' guide will take you to the top of Lampivaara fell (small mountain) where you can enjoy the very top view of the area, over the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Then you will be seated in a wooden shelter, sipping warm berry beverages and listening to the facts and beliefs of this fascinating purple gemstone.
After the story, you will be heading to the digging area. A part of the open digging area is covered by roof, so amethyst searching is possible also during the winter time. Each visitor will be able to dig for their own personal lucky amethyst. In the end of the visit, there is some time to drop by a small “Amethyst Shop” on site. No active cycling background required. This activity is available for winter and summer.

Lampivaara Amethyst mine is a unique attraction in Luosto, Lapland. This authentic and special mine is located on top of the fell in the middle of Pyhä-Luosto National park. The geological age of the area is billions of years. The view at and from the mine is breathtaking, and the site beams positive energy stored in stones.
At the mine you will be invited into a wooden house, the guide will tell a story about this fascinating stone, and how it was formed more than 2000 million years ago. Afterwards, everyone may search and dig own amethyst stone and take it home as a memento.
Amethyst Mine is operating in an extraordinary way: no big machines are used for digging and none of the rich deposit is sold as a raw material. The sustainable Amethyst Mine is welcoming visitors all year round.

Travel in Pyhä
Information about the Pyhä region
Pyhä is only 1 hour 30 minutes’ drive from the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi Airport and railway station. From Rovaniemi city, railway station and airport there are daily connections from 1. December–1. May four times a day and from 1. June–30. November, twice a day via Luosto to Pyhä.
Distance to the airport Kittilä is 1h 45 min, to the airport Kuusamo 2h 45 min and to the railway station Kemijärvi 45 min. From the railway station, Kemijärvi, there is a daily bus connection to Pyhä.
