Snowmobile revolution in Sweden - Vidde Alfa redefines winter mobility in Swedish Lapland

The Swedish start-up Vidde Mobility, which collaborates with the renowned Italian design house Pininfarina, could make history. Together, the two companies have developed Vidde Alfa, the world's cleanest snowmobile.

The presentation, which took place on February 18, 2024 at the IceHotel in Swedish Lapland, marks a significant step towards environmentally friendly snow mobility.

The Vidde Alfa promises durability and functionality

The Vidde Alfa aims to redefine snowmobility by reducing its carbon footprint to less than 100g CO2/km - a significant improvement compared to conventional snowmobiles, which emit around 550g CO2/km. The innovative design, developed in collaboration with Pininfarina, prioritizes not only the pure pleasure of using the vehicle, but also focuses on durability and functionality.

Key features of the Vidde Alfa include a battery system with an internal thermal mechanism that ensures the snowmobile can withstand arctic conditions down to -39°C.

Focus on fossil-free transportation

Vidde Mobility plans to test the pre-series snowmobile throughout the season in partnership with SkiStar, Sveaskog and Skellefteå Kraft as well as the Icehotel. The company emphasizes its commitment to fossil-free transport, taking into account the entire product life cycle, from raw materials to production, use and end of life.

CEO Christian Lystrup expresses the company's dedication to sustainable practices that align with the global transition to fossil-free transportation. The goal is to transition to a fossil-free transportation industry, and Vidde Mobility carefully selects partners and components that share this vision.

Production of the Vidde Alfa is scheduled to start at the end of 2024, with deliveries at a price of €26,200.

The initiative holds promising prospects for Swedish Lapland, where snowmobiles are a necessity to traverse the vast landscape. Electrifying these vehicles could have a positive impact on nature and wildlife by reducing CO2 emissions and minimizing noise disturbance, contributing to the region's 2030 sustainability goals.

Sweden's northernmost province, Norrbotten, has around 85,855 registered snowmobiles out of a total of 350,360 vehicles. Arjeplog leads the statistics in terms of density with 65 snowmobiles per 100 inhabitants, demonstrating the popularity and importance of snowmobiles throughout the region.
