Doctors can now prescribe trips to Sweden for health and wellbeing
Better sleep thanks to a sauna in Lapland or improved circulation from a cold plunge in the archipelago? Sweden has launched a pioneering initiative: it is now the world’s first country where doctors can prescribe travel.
Boosting health through nature, culture and community
According to a new global survey commissioned by Visit Sweden, two out of three respondents would spend more time outdoors if their physician recommended it. Scientific research shows that nature, cultural, and social experiences support both physical and mental health – strengths that Sweden offers in abundance.
“The Swedish lifestyle naturally supports wellbeing – from access to forests and lakes, to clean air, cooler summers, wholesome fika breaks and a vibrant cultural life,” says Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden.
The Swedish Prescription – how it works
Visit Sweden has launched a science-based program with three key pillars: nature, culture, and social prescribing. Patients worldwide can download a referral form online and discuss it with their GP. Suggested activities include picking cloudberries to lower blood pressure or sleeping under the starry sky to regulate circadian rhythms.
Doctors in several countries are already prepared to issue such prescriptions. Sweden, in collaboration with medical experts, has designed three programs that travelers can follow during their stay, from forest bathing to social encounters and cultural experiences.
Possible side effects: a strong craving for cinnamon buns and more friluftsliv.
