Easier and faster travel experience at Helsinki Airport

Finavia is introducing new technology for security checks at Helsinki Airport. In addition, check-in in Terminals 1 and 2 will soon be a thing of the past. This will speed up and simplify the processes at Helsinki Airport.

All flights via one single terminal

Check-in and baggage services will be centrally located at Helsinki Airport in the future. For all flights, these operations will then take place in the new terminal extension, which opened last December. This means that in the future passengers will no longer have to think about which terminal they are departing from or where they are arriving. This will also be a relief for those picking up or dropping off passengers.

The transition to the new space will take place in two phases in spring and summer. In the first phase, from 21 March to 23 May 2022, airlines currently operating from Terminal 2, including Finnair, Air Baltic and British Airways, will move to the expansion's new departure hall.

The second phase will begin on 1 June. Then airlines such as Norwegian, Lufthansa and SAS, which currently operate from Terminal 1, will relocate to the new departure and arrival halls. By 30 June at the latest, Helsinki Airport will be fully converted to the single terminal operating model. The check-in area, security check and baggage claim in Terminal 1 will be closed.

Technology and liquids in hand luggage

Finavia will also be using new, modern technology for security checks in the future. Among other things, this will allow both electronics and liquids to remain in hand luggage during the security check. "The new security check technology at Helsinki Airport means that laptops, phones or large SLR cameras, for example, no longer need to be taken out of hand luggage. The plastic bags in which containers with less than one hundred millilitres of liquid must be packed can also remain in the hand luggage," says Henri Hansson, Senior Vice President, Airport Infrastructure, Sustainability, Safety, Security & Compliance at Finavia.

Transition phase with old devices

During a transition period, the old devices will continue to be used, so some electronics and liquids must still be removed from hand luggage. However, passengers will be advised of the correct procedure by Finavia staff, signs and the security officers.
