Viking Line switches to green electricity

Viking Line's proactive switch to green electricity from renewable sources is a significant step towards reducing its annual greenhouse gas emissions by almost 780 tonnes.

This measure precedes the 2030 legal mandate that ships must use electricity from shore during their laytime. Viking Line has used only green electricity in the ports of Mariehamn, Helsinki and Tallinn, which has led to an effective reduction in CO2 and particulate emissions.

However, on the route to Turku, where layovers are short, the introduction of shore-side electricity remains a challenge. Nevertheless, Viking Line continues to strive to optimise the energy efficiency of the entire fleet. The company utilises innovative technologies, such as energy recovery systems, to convert waste heat from the engines into usable electricity. In addition, the ship's systems are regularly updated and improved as part of maintenance intervals to ensure continuous improvement in energy efficiency.

Viking Line is committed to systematically reducing the emissions of its entire fleet. It demonstrates their commitment to not only meeting but exceeding regulatory standards and positions them as a pioneer of sustainable practices in maritime transport.
