Silja Serenade cancelled due to necessary system cleaning in Stockholm

During routine water quality monitoring on the Helsinki-Stockholm route, elevated concentrations of legionella above the established limits were detected in several areas of Silja Serenade's water system. As a precautionary measure, the shipping company has decided to cancel the ship's voyages from 12 to 14 November 2023 in order to carry out a chlorine shock treatment of the systems. Regular services will resume on 14 November at 16:45.

Passengers who wanted to travel from Finland on the evening of 11 November 2023 were offered alternative solutions. Cabins with elevated bacteria levels were closed and additional measures such as increasing the ship's hot water temperature and disinfecting the water points were taken to eliminate the legionella bacteria.

Legionella is not transmitted from person to person or through drinking water, but by inhaling water aerosols. Symptoms of legionellosis include dry cough, fever, headache, muscle aches and shortness of breath with an incubation period of 2-10 days. Passengers are urged to monitor their health and consult their GP if symptoms occur after travelling with Silja Serenade.

Customers affected by the cancellations will be contacted by the company and informed about alternative solutions. The readings on all other ships of the company are within normal range and the voyages are not affected.
