Ferry company Holland Norway Lines is insolvent

Update 04.09.2023: Holland Norway Lines has officially filed for bankruptcy

After ferry operations were suspended last week, the company filed for bankruptcy this morning (04.09.2023).The shipping company Tallink has terminated the charter contract of the MS Romantika prematurely and the ship will now return to Estonia. There will be no further trips by the shipping company Holland Norway Lines from Emden to Kristiansand.

Holland Norway Lines pauses operations due to financial challenges (original news from 1.9.)

The Dutch ferry company Holland Norway Lines BV has temporarily suspended its ferry service between Emden and Kristiansand and is no longer selling tickets for the time being. The reason for this is the difficult financial situation of the company, especially due to the losses at the beginning of the year in Eemshaven. On 30 August, Holland Norway Lines applied for a stay of payment in court.

The shipping company had originally planned to continue its operations in Emden until at least the end of next year, after moving from Eemshaven in the Netherlands to Emden in Germany due to a lack of space. The company has carried nearly 400,000 passengers on the cruise ferry MS Romantika since its establishment in 2022 and employs nearly 400 people. All employees in Groningen, Kristiansand and on board the ferry have been informed of the temporary halt in operations.
