Hurtigruten upgrades MS Kong Harald to a hybrid ship

The Hurtigruten ship MS Kong Harald sailed from Bergen on 4 May as a modern hybrid ship with large battery packs and brand new engines after a comprehensive environmental refurbishment. Hurtigruten Norway is to spend over NOK 1 billion in the environmental upgrade of all seven ships on the coastal route.

MS Kong Harald was built in 1993 and has now undergone a complete technical upgrade. The ship has been equipped with the latest technology to reduce emissions. The interior of the ship, both cabins and public areas, were completely renovated in 2016 and 2023.

Focus on more environmentally friendly experiences

The company is pleased to be able to offer its guests an even more sustainable experience. "This is one of the largest environmentally friendly refurbishments of its kind in Europe and the largest in Hurtigruten's history. With the 'new' Kong Harald now back in service as our second hybrid ship, guests will be able to travel along the coast on a quieter, technically advanced and more environmentally friendly vessel," says Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten Norway.

As part of its efforts to make its fleet more sustainable, Hurtigruten Norway will have invested more than NOK 1 billion in environmentally friendly upgrades to all seven ships on the coastal route by the end of 2023 to further reduce emissions.
