Finavia plans the use of hydrogen to power heavy airport vehicles

The Finnish airport operator Finavia is involved in the HyAirport hydrogen project for airports in the Baltic Sea region and wants to develop the necessary logistics for using hydrogen as a power source for airport machines.

Hydrogen can be used as a potential power source for heavy airport equipment or short flight distances. The HyAirport project aims to promote fossil-free air transport in the Baltic Sea region and has been funded by the EU with 4 million euros. The international hydrogen project aims to develop the hydrogen supply chain from production to fuelling of airport equipment and aircraft to test operations.

For the time being, Finavia wants to convert winter maintenance equipment for hydrogen use. At Helsinki Airport alone, there are more than 20 snow removal machines that could run on hydrogen.

An important step for air traffic

4 million euros has been made available by the EU's Interreg programme for the Baltic Sea Region Hydrogen Project. The international cooperation is scheduled for three years and represents an important step towards fossil-free air transport in the Baltic Sea region.

The HyAirport project is led by Hamburg Airport. It will start in November 2023. Besides Finavia, several airport operators around the Baltic Sea are involved, including Swedavia, Lithuanian airports, Riga Airport and Tallinn Airport. In Finland, research institutes and universities as well as airport equipment manufacturers and authorities are also participating in the project.
