Bane Nor rebuilds Randklev Bridge

Bane Nor has started a market dialogue with potential contractors for the new construction of the Randklev Bridge, including talks with Deutsche Bahn. The Randklev Bridge south of Ringebu was severely damaged during the extreme weather event "Hans".

The large volumes of water in Gudbrandsdalslågen caused one of the bridge foundations to collapse and two of the bridge elements to sink into the river.

On Monday 30 October, the first of the two bridge elements for the Randklev Bridge was lifted ashore. A crane from Denmark was brought to Norway for this purpose. The second element will be brought ashore this week and inspected for possible damage.

Bane Nor is in contact with Deutsche Bahn to find a solution for temporary bridge spans in case the bridge spans that fell into the river cannot be reused. The decision on a temporary solution from Deutsche Bahn is expected to be made at the end of November.

The condition of the bridge elements will largely determine how quickly the Randklev Bridge can be rebuilt. Reuse would also be the best solution from a sustainability perspective.

In addition to rebuilding or repairing the bridge elements, the collapsed foundation also needs to be replaced. The new foundation should have a larger base area and provide better protection against erosion and undermining.

Bane Nor wants to present a schedule for the reconstruction of the bridge before Christmas. The aim is to quickly have through trains on Dovrebanen again in order to reduce the number of lorries and cars passing through Gudbrandsdalen.

Impact on tourism

The bridge collapse had a significant impact on tourism in the region. As the bridge was an important transport hub, train services between Ringebu and Dombås were temporarily suspended. This led to restrictions for travellers and businesses that relied on the railway.

The closure of the line forced travellers and freight traffic to switch to alternative means of transport such as lorries and cars, which led to increased road traffic in the region.

The tourist appeal of the region was also affected, as train transport is an environmentally friendly and convenient option for tourists. The reopening of the bridge and the restoration of train services will therefore help to revitalize tourism in the area and reduce the environmental impact of road traffic.
