Widerøe builds a gateway to Norway's Fjord Majesty

Norwegian airline Widerøe is set to elevate travel experiences with the announcement of a new direct route from Brussels to Bergen, Norway, scheduled to commence on April 12, 2024. This exciting development promises to provide unparalleled access to the breathtaking Norwegian fjords along the enchanting west coast.

Kristin Gaustad, Sales and Marketing Manager Leisure Travel at Widerøe, expresses enthusiasm about the direct gateway to the Norwegian fjords. "Bergen offers stunning diversity, from cultural and historical experiences to impressive landscapes. This new flight connection makes it easy to immerse oneself in the majestic fjord landscape," she affirms. The bi-weekly flights, departing on Mondays and Fridays, cater to the wanderlust of travelers, offering opportunities for well-deserved city breaks or extended vacations to explore the wonders of the Norwegian fjord region.

Growing interest in the north

Norway's appeal as a holiday destination has seen a significant rise, especially during the Covid pandemic. Chief Communications Officer Fjord Norway, Kristoffer Fürstenberg, notes the growing interest from Belgium, citing a 51% increase in guest overnight stays from Belgium in September compared to 2022. Since 2019, the overall number of visitors has surged by an impressive 67%. "With this flight route, the fjords will be accessible to 20 million people within a 90-minute drive from Brussels Airport, making Norway an even more relevant and accessible destination for many," Fürstenberg adds.

The allure of combining nature and culture finds its epitome in Bergen, Norway's second-largest city. With its compact city center and easy access to mountains, fjords, glaciers, and refreshing nature experiences, Bergen becomes a sought-after destination for those seeking a harmonious blend of natural wonders and cultural richness. Fürstenberg believes that Norway fulfills the desires of many Belgians seeking a vacation that offers space, peace, and tranquility. "With plenty of space, beautiful nature, and refreshing experiences, we see more and more people opening their eyes to vacation in places that offer experiences beyond just sandy beaches," he observes.

Gateway to the Norwegian fjords

As the gateway to the Norwegian fjords, Bergen, served by Widerøe's extensive network, has become a domestic hub connecting travelers to various parts of Norway. Kristin Gaustad notes that Bergen's significance extends beyond its fjords, allowing easy access to Northern Norway with its mesmerizing midnight sun and the enchanting Northern Lights. "With many daily departures between Bergen and Northern Norway (Tromsø and Bodø), travelers can combine a fjord holiday with the Northern Lights and the midnight sun in the northern parts of Norway," Gaustad explains. Fürstenberg concludes, "The fjords and the Northern Lights are by far the most popular attractions in Norway. With this flight from Brussels, people have the opportunity to experience both in just a few days. Two 'bucket list experiences' in one."
