SJ maintains train route from Stockholm to Berlin

The Swedish railway company SJ has been granted permission to continue operating its daily night train from Stockholm via Copenhagen and Hamburg to Berlin. Passenger interest was greater than expected.

Originally, the SJ Euronight was planned to finish its journey from Stockholm via Copenhagen and Odense to Hamburg at the end of this month. But now a press release from SJ (Statens Järnvägar) says that they can keep the German capital as the final stop.

SJ Euronight leaves Stockholm in the late afternoon and arrives in Berlin the next morning, a total journey time of 15 hours. There are also daily journeys in the opposite direction from Berlin via Hamburg and Denmark to Sweden. Christer Litzell, Managing Director at SJ, said in the press release that it was originally planned that SJ Euronight would only run as far as Hamburg in the autumn and winter. He described the fact that the route can now be maintained to Berlin as "really good news". "Passengers have continued to show great interest in travelling the entire route to Berlin with SJ Euronight. And now that we have reached a new agreement with our German partner (RDC Germany), we can continue to run our night trains all the way to Berlin," the CEO said.

Also used for business trips

According to SJ, interest in the Stockholm-Berlin route is not only high among leisure travellers, but also among companies that choose the 15-hour train journey instead of air travel for business trips or conferences in Europe. "At the same time, we also have more travellers from Germany going to Sweden than we had expected," Christer Litzell added. SJ states that the timetable and prices for travelling by night train remain unchanged. SJ Euronight offers different price types, depending on the level of comfort desired. There are seating and couchette cars as well as real sleeping compartments. On the way from Stockholm, the train stops in Norrköping, Linköping, Nässjö, Alvesta, Hässleholm, Lund and Malmö before travelling to Germany via Copenhagen and Odense.
