Hurtigruten plans first zero-emission ship by 2030

Project with SINTEF already initiated 

In cooperation with the Norwegian research organization SINTEF, the shipping company Hurtigruten wants to develop emission-free ships for the Norwegian coast. In 2030, the first emission-free ship is to be put into operation on the classic mail ship route. It is still unclear which technology will be used - hydrogen, ammonia or other solutions.

The first phase of the project is already underway. During this, SINTEF is developing a feasibility study in which technological and operational solutions will be explored. In the next phase, leading partners from the maritime industry will be invited to participate in developing the project further. 

In addition, Hurtigruten is currently modernizing the existing fleet. The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 25 per cent and NOx-emissions by 80 per cent.
