Finnish capital leads the Global Destination Sustainability Index 2025

Helsinki has once again been named the world’s most sustainable travel destination, leading the Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index 2025 for the second consecutive year. The Finnish capital achieved an impressive score of 93.52%, clearly placing it at the top of the 40 leading cities worldwide recognized for their sustainable tourism strategies. This success is based on a comprehensive approach encompassing environmental performance, supply chain management, social responsibility, and transparent target monitoring. Notably, nearly 99% of hotel rooms in accommodations with more than 50 beds are environmentally certified, alongside increased use of renewable energy and climate-friendly district heating.

Mayor Daniel Sazonov emphasized that this achievement is the result of continuous investment in sustainable growth and responsible tourism management. The city follows a clear strategy to position Helsinki as an inviting destination for environmentally conscious travelers. In line with this vision, Helsinki became in March 2025 the first city with more than 500,000 inhabitants to receive the Green Destinations GSTC certification – one of the world’s strictest awards in sustainable tourism. This recognition highlights Helsinki’s commitment to transparent and reliable sustainability practices that go beyond mere marketing measures.
