National recognition strengthens sustainable positioning

Helsinki was awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label in April 2026 by Visit Finland. This further strengthens the Finnish capital’s position as one of the world’s leading sustainable destinations, also from a national perspective. Helsinki has been part of the STF pilot programme since 2019 and has also gained strong international recognition in recent years: the city ranked first in the Global Destination Sustainability Index in both 2024 and 2025 and also received the Green Destinations certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

Strong industry engagement as a key success factor

The award is based on clear criteria: in addition to an internationally recognised certification, the commitment of local tourism businesses is essential. In Helsinki, both the destination itself and more than half of international tourism providers meet the requirements of the STF programme. The programme is based on international sustainability standards and offers a structured development path for companies and destinations. Certification is regularly independently audited and is valid for Helsinki until April 2028.
