Positive operational result in 2024 for the Norwegian coastal shipping company

For the first time in its company history, Havila Voyages has reported an operating profit in 2024. With a result of around 19 million euros on the Bergen–Kirkenes coastal route, the company sees this as a turning point after difficult early years. Havila generated a total revenue of approximately 130 million euros, yet still closed the year with a net loss of nearly 137 million euros, mainly due to high interest payments.

“This is a milestone,” says CEO Bent Martini, pointing out that 2024 was the first full year with all four vessels in operation. After delays in ship deliveries and financial challenges, this positive development marks a new chapter for the young company, founded in 2017.

Clear success on emissions reduction

Havila also made major progress on sustainability. Compared to 2017 – when only diesel-powered vessels served the route – the company achieved a 35% reduction in CO₂ emissions, exceeding the 25% annual reduction target set by Norwegian authorities. Even more significant were reductions in other pollutants: nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) dropped by 87%, while sulfur dioxide (SOx) emissions were completely eliminated.

Sustainability onboard

Havila is also leading in onboard sustainability. By avoiding traditional buffets and focusing on locally sourced ingredients, the cruise line managed to limit food waste to just 68 grams per guest per night – well below the internal target of 75 grams. “Compared to traditional buffet solutions, we save up to 65 tons of ingredients per year,” says Martini, emphasizing the dual benefit for both the environment and business performance.

Regional partnerships as a key pillar

Another core element of Havila’s strategy is cooperation with local providers: Around 80 regional partners deliver tours and services to guests along the Norwegian coast. The company also relies almost exclusively on Norwegian food suppliers. In addition to tourism, Havila fulfills public service responsibilities under the government’s coastal contract, including the transport of passengers and cargo to remote communities.
