Modernisation of the Bergen funicular railway

The local mountain of the Norwegian city of Bergen, the Fløyen, can normally be climbed via the famous Fløibanen. However, this has been at a standstill since September 2021 and is now undergoing a thorough modernisation. A reopening is planned for April 2022.

Opened in 1918, Fløibanen has already been renovated several times, most recently in 2002. Now the cableway is to be extended. In the future, the cable railway will end five metres higher up, which will also provide direct access to the viewing platform of the mountain. Among other things, the stops of the funicular will be made barrier-free, new safety precautions will be introduced, and new carriages will be used, which can carry 120 people. Traditionally, these have the colours red and blue, with their glass roofs offering panoramic views.
