Scandlines' Futura is considered a milestone for sustainable travel across the Fehmarnbelt

Scandlines recently took a significant step towards environmentally friendly shipping. On 25 November, the launching of its new cargo ferry took place at the Cemre shipyard in Turkey. This Zero Direct Emissions cargo ferry will later be named "Futura" when it officially enters service on the Fehmarnbelt.

Before the final handover to the shipping company, final work will be carried out, including painting the ship in the dock.

The "Futura" is a pioneering ferry for environmentally friendly sea voyages. Equipped with the world's largest battery system to date, it offers a 100 per cent electric propulsion solution. This innovation brings a foretaste of the future of the Fehmarnbelt crossing, long before the tunnel from Puttgarden to Rødby is completed.

Carsten Nørland, CEO of Scandlines, emphasised the importance of the "Futura" for environmentally friendly and pleasant travel. The investment in environmentally friendly ferries is a clear sign of their commitment to the environment and their conviction that the demand for journeys that do not only take place on the motorway remains strong.

The official christening of the "Futura" is planned for 2024 and marks the beginning of a new era for environmentally friendly sea travel on the Fehmarnbelt.
