Edelweiss Air expands its flight offerings to Lapland
The Swiss airline Edelweiss Air, a member of the Lufthansa Group, will launch year-round scheduled flights between Zurich and Kittilä Airport in Lapland starting in December 2024. This new route will be the second year-round flight connection from Central Europe to Lapland.
Twice a week in winter, once a week in summer
Starting from December 11, 2024, Edelweiss Air will operate the Zurich-Kittilä route twice a week during the winter season 2024/2025. From June to September 2025, the route will continue with one weekly flight on Saturdays.
The service will be operated by an Airbus A320 with 174 seats. With this addition, the number of international summer flights to Kittilä will increase to three per week. Discover Airlines, also part of the Lufthansa Group, had already announced year-round flights from Frankfurt to Kittilä in August.
Importance for tourism in Lapland
The new route is an important step in improving Lapland’s accessibility. "For year-round tourism in Lapland, the availability of regular flight connections is essential," explains Petri Vuori, SVP for Sales and Route Development at Finavia. Close cooperation with airlines and partners plays a crucial role in enhancing Lapland’s appeal as an international destination.
Not only tourists but also local residents will benefit from this new connection, as Kittilä will be directly linked to Zurich Airport’s extensive network.
Lufthansa group expands offerings for winter
In addition to the new Edelweiss Air route, Lufthansa Group airlines have announced several new routes for the winter season. Lufthansa will introduce flights from Frankfurt to Rovaniemi, Edelweiss Air will also operate from Zurich to Rovaniemi, Austrian Airlines will connect Vienna with Kittilä and Ivalo, and Eurowings will offer flights from Hamburg to Kittilä and Rovaniemi, as well as from Stuttgart to Rovaniemi.
