Digital platform unifies Sweden’s entire offer and boosts international visibility

Visit Sweden has launched a national API (Application Programming Interface), becoming one of the first countries in the world to centralize its entire tourism offer in a single digital system. The initiative aims to foster innovation, streamline collaboration, and enhance Sweden’s global presence in tourism.

The API consolidates data from all 21 regions, structuring around 14,000 entries – from accommodations and events to experiences – according to the global schema.org standard. This creates a flexible, open system where data can be freely accessed, reused, and integrated into digital services worldwide. More entries are being added continuously.

Driving innovation and future growth

The new platform enables developers and businesses to build a wide range of services, from AI-powered travel apps and smart recommendations to sustainability tracking and hyper-local planning tools. Since the data is open and license-free, both global tech platforms and small local operators benefit. Each contributor retains ownership of their content, updating it once and distributing it across multiple channels in real time.

“By adopting a shared digital standard, we strengthen Sweden’s international appeal and make it easier for travelers worldwide to discover our destinations,” says Sara Modig, State Secretary to Sweden’s Minister for Energy and Business.

Nationwide collaboration

The initiative was developed in close collaboration with regional tourism organizations, municipalities, industry associations, and individual companies, ensuring alignment with market needs. “The strength lies not only in the scale but also in the diversity and quality of the data – from small independent businesses to major hotel chains,” explains Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden.

Major players like Scandic Hotels, Best Western Hotels & Resort, Strawberry, and Svenska Turistföreningen (STF) are already on board.
