Viking Line leading the way in sustainable practices

Viking Line has launched an innovative program to recycle coffee grounds from its vessel restaurants into nutrient-rich soil, significantly reducing reliance on virgin peat moss.

Efficient collection and processing

The company collects coffee grounds and used cooking oil from five vessels, transporting them to Saarijärvi, Finland. There, Berner Oy processes the grounds into its GreenCare fertilizer line, while the cooking oil is converted into hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable diesel alternative. Dani Lindberg, Viking Line’s Sustainability Manager, emphasized the importance of this circular economy initiative, which enhances transport efficiency and minimizes emissions.

A world-first initiative

This systematic approach to coffee ground collection is unprecedented globally. For every 40-liter bag of soil produced, approximately 560 cups of coffee are used, leading to a 30% reduction in virgin peat usage. Last year, Viking Line collected 1,475 tonnes of food waste, generating biogas equivalent to 127,000 liters of petrol.

Viking Line’s commitment to sustainability positions it as a leader in maritime operations, setting a precedent for eco-friendly practices.
