The time of the midnight sun begins in Lapland

The nightless nights herald the summer season in the far north

Since last Monday, the sun no longer sets in the northern parts of Finnish Lapland - for more than two months.

The inhabitants of Utsjoki, a small village in northern Finland, and some other towns in northern Lapland will not see the sun set again until the end of July. The next really dark night will not come until 02 August.

Theoretically, the 24-hour daylight period only occurs in regions above the Arctic Circle, but in practice it is different. The midnight sun is scattered as far as Kemi by the refraction of light in the Earth's atmosphere. There it does not set for at least one day a year.

The further north you go, the longer you can experience the nocturnal night. In Utsjoki, the northernmost town in Finland, the period of the midnight sun lasts for more than two months.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) forecasts optimal conditions for midnight sun watchers in the region. Higher temperatures and less precipitation than average are expected in late May and early June.
