A new chapter for the Vaasa–Umeå route as Stena Line steps in to operate the world’s northernmost year-round international ferry line
Stena Line has announced the acquisition of NLC Ferry Ab Oy/Wasaline, taking over operations of the ferry route between Vaasa (Finland) and Umeå (Sweden). The deal marks a major step in reinforcing Stena Line’s presence in the Baltic Sea region.
“We are delighted to take responsibility for the Vaasa–Umeå route, connecting two dynamic regions and cities,” said Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line. The current operator, Wasaline, is owned by the cities of Vaasa and Umeå through their joint company Kvarken Link. Under the new agreement, Stena Line will acquire NLC Ferry, while Kvarken Link retains ownership of the eco-friendly vessel Aurora Botnia.
Focus on growth and sustainability
According to Peter Ståhlberg, CEO of Wasaline, the acquisition ensures long-term continuity and growth potential for the route. “We’re proud to join forces with Stena Line, continuing our efforts toward environmental and operational excellence. The staff and service will remain the same, but with even greater potential for development,” he said.
In July 2025, Wasaline and Stena Line jointly entered a biogas and Fuel EU Maritime pooling agreement with Gasum, making the Umeå–Vaasa route the first international green shipping corridor. This aligns with Stena Line’s ambition to lead in sustainable maritime transport. “With Wasaline, we gain not only a vessel equipped with advanced green technology, but also stronger intermodal links from northern Scandinavia toward Gothenburg, Trelleborg, and continental Europe,” added Mårtensson.
Local partnerships, global outlook
Representatives from both cities highlight the broader regional benefits. Hans Lindberg, Chair of Umeå’s Municipal Executive Board, emphasized the importance of strengthening cross-border infrastructure and resilience, while Frans Villanen, Chair of Vaasa City Council, called the move “the natural next step after years of successful collaboration.”
What happens next
The acquisition is subject to approval by the municipal councils of Umeå and Vaasa, expected in November 2025, and standard regulatory clearances. If approved, the transaction will close in early 2026. With the addition of the Vaasa–Umeå route, Stena Line will operate five routes in the Baltic Sea, connecting Sweden, Finland, Germany, Latvia, and Poland.
