Stena Line will no longer operate the Sweden-Finland route in view of changing market dynamics

Swedish ferry company Stena Line has announced the discontinuation of its service connecting Nynäshamn in Sweden and Hanko in Finland, effective from October 20. The decision primarily results from dwindling demand from freight clients due to the evolving geopolitical situation. The route will continue to operate until October 20, after which both vessels on this route will be reassigned to the charter market or other roles within the Stena Line fleet.

In early 2022, Stena Line inaugurated this route in response to strong market demand and direct requests from its existing logistics network clients. However, due to the changing geopolitical landscape, the earlier high volumes have reduced, and market competition has intensified. Consequently, the demand from Stena Line's trade customers on this route has not met expectations.

Furthermore, the Finnish government's recent decision to grant exemptions from the European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS) for vessels trading via Åland from January 1, 2024, has created an uneven playing field, favoring trade via Åland. Given these developments and the near-term outlook, Stena Line has decided to cease operations on this route, effective from October 20, as the vessels will be repurposed for new roles within the charter market or the Stena Line fleet.

Johan Edelman, Trade Director Baltic Sea North at Stena Line, expressed, "It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to discontinue our Sweden to Finland route. While a difficult choice, we are confident that it's the right one after considering all aspects."

Stena Line is currently engaged in discussions with the trade union and individuals on the route to keep them updated. All freight customers and passengers with bookings after October 20 will be notified and offered refunds, along with assistance in securing alternative transportation when needed.
