New waterfront hotel in Norra hamn aims to put Piteå on the tourism map

Piteå in northern Sweden is set to combine urban development with a unique tourism concept: The Fjärden project will bring to life the world’s first "Skate-in, Skate-out" hotel, where winter guests can step outside and glide straight onto the frozen Nördfjärden bay and its popular ice track.

The hotel is part of a broader transformation of Norra hamn into a vibrant waterfront district, featuring housing, cafés, restaurants, a bathing area, and a traditional cold bathhouse, all designed to blend city life with nature.

A boost for Piteå’s tourism profile

With its prime location by the water and an innovative concept linking recreation and hospitality, the hotel is expected to attract attention well beyond Sweden. By offering guests direct access to ice-skating in winter, Piteå positions itself as a year-round destination with a truly distinctive appeal.

Next steps

The project, developed in close cooperation between local partners and the municipality, is scheduled to break ground within the next five years. The "Skate-in, Skate-out" hotel is poised to become a new landmark. A symbol of how Piteå is merging modern city living with bold tourism development.
