Long-term agreement supports sustainable travel and tour planning
Tour operators can continue to rely on overnight rail services to Northern Sweden. The Swedish Transport Administration has awarded SJ the contract to operate the overnight routes between Stockholm and Northern Sweden until the end of 2028.
The agreement secures daily services between Stockholm and Narvik, as well as Stockholm and Umeå, allowing travelers to reach northern destinations comfortably in sleeper or couchette cars without changing trains.
Reliable rail connections for Nordic itineraries
The decision provides long-term certainty for tour operators developing programmes in Northern Sweden. Overnight trains remain an important transport option for round trips and multi-destination itineraries while offering an attractive alternative to domestic flights.
As demand for more sustainable travel continues to grow, rail connections are becoming increasingly important for travelers looking to combine trains, ferries and flights across the Nordic region.
More comfort planned for the future
Looking ahead, new overnight trains are expected to enter service from 2030. Planned improvements include family compartments, premium cabins with private showers and accessible accommodation, further enhancing the travel experience.
Reliable transport infrastructure is essential for destination development. The long-term commitment to overnight rail services strengthens Northern Sweden's accessibility and supports the growing demand for sustainable travel.
