Minister Myrseth announces measures to regulate tourism in the Lofoten Islands
Norway's Industry Minister Cecilie Myrseth plans to introduce a tourist tax in Lofoten to regulate the impact of increasing tourism. The tax, which stems from complaints from local residents and business owners about the behaviour of motorhome owners, is part of a broader strategy anchored in the government's tourism roadmap presented in February. This roadmap includes 43 measures to strengthen and sustain the tourism industry, including local visitor funding.
In addition to the tourist tax, Myrseth intends to present a proposal for a national certification system for travel and tourism guides in the autumn to ensure the quality and safety of guided tours in Norway's mountains. The aim is to develop Norway into the world's most sustainable tourist destination that is both profitable and environmentally friendly. The tourism industry, which employs over 180,000 people, is to be made ecologically and economically sustainable in the long term.
