Expansion in Södra City with a focus on sustainability and business guests

Scandic Hotels has announced another major project in Sweden: in cooperation with real estate company Vasakronan, a new hotel with 236 rooms will be built in southern Uppsala by 2028. The location in the up-and-coming Södra City district is conveniently situated between the main railway station and the Fyrisån River.

A hotel designed for business, leisure and sustainability

In addition to a spacious restaurant with park views, the new Scandic hotel will offer a bar, a fitness centre, and seven flexible meeting rooms—including a divisible hall for up to 200 participants. Hotel guests will also benefit from proximity to the university hospital, the Studenternas sports ground, and the popular city park featuring the historic Flustret venue. The property is being developed as a mixed-use building, with hotel and office spaces sharing the lobby and entrance areas. A modern gym of around 100 square metres is also part of the concept.

Uppsala as a strategic growth location

“Uppsala is Sweden’s fourth-largest hotel market and one of the country’s most progressive cities—making it an ideal location for our continued growth in strategically important regions across the Nordics,” says Jens Mathiesen, CEO of Scandic Hotels Group. Jesper Engman, Senior Vice President Portfolio Development, adds: “With this new hotel, we’re strengthening our presence in a city with great future potential. We’re excited about the partnership with Vasakronan and the development of Södra City.” Uppsala combines academic, scientific, and cultural appeal. Located just 30 minutes from Stockholm and 18 minutes from Arlanda Airport, the city is also an attractive weekend destination for leisure and cultural travellers.

The new hotel building aims for Platinum-level LEED certification. The operations will also comply with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel—one of the strictest sustainability standards in the Nordics, which is already held by most Scandic properties. Construction is set to begin in autumn 2025, with the grand opening scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.
