From baroque beauty to creative revival – Latvia’s historic estates open their doors to travellers seeking more than just a stay

Across Latvia, dozens of manors and castles invite visitors to step into history. Some preserve centuries-old architecture untouched by renovation; others reinvent their legacy with modern design, gourmet dining, and even spa indulgence. Together, they form a living network of heritage and hospitality.

Authentic heritage: Arendole Manor

On the quiet banks of the Dubna River in Latgale, Arendole Manor offers a rare glimpse of untouched history. Its architecture remains completely original, wrapped in a century-old park. Guests can sleep in the authentic “gentlemen’s rooms” and unwind in the historic black sauna by the river — a journey back in time, preserved in perfect stillness.

The only wooden manor in Kuldīga: Virka Manor

Head west toward Kuldīga, and you’ll find Virka Manor, Latvia’s only wooden manor house. Built in the style of Swiss summer villas, it bridges the gap between rustic charm and modern comfort. Each of the 22 rooms tells its own story, blending antique spirit with contemporary design. Just 155 kilometres from Riga, it’s an ideal weekend escape with a heritage twist.

Baroque elegance meets slow living: Liepupe Manor

Built in 1751, Liepupe Manor in Vidzeme is one of Latvia’s best-preserved baroque estates. Designed by Riga bricklayer Johan Andreas Haberland, it celebrates both architecture and atmosphere. Visitors can stroll through the manor park, relax in hammocks, or cycle through the countryside on Latvian-made Ērenpreiss bikes. With its restaurant and spa, Liepupe is a retreat for mind and senses alike.

Jaunmoku Castle – a royal escape

If grandeur is your goal, Jaunmoku Castle near Tukums promises just that. Once the hunting lodge of Riga’s mayor George Armitstead, the 1901 castle blends neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau flair. Today, it hosts a museum, fine-dining restaurant, and overnight stays fit for royalty. Between forest and parkland, it’s a place where history meets romance.

Abgunste Manor – where creativity lives

For a bohemian twist on manor life, head to Abgunste Manor. This revived treasure doubles as an art residence, hosting creative camps and symposia. Restoration since 2016 has revealed original brick walls and antique details. Staying here feels like living inside a story — one that continues to be written by every visitor.

A journey through Latvia’s heritage

Whether you seek silence, splendour, or inspiration, Latvia’s manors are more than monuments — they’re living stories. Each stay connects travellers to centuries of craftsmanship, culture, and creativity.
