Finland's VR buys 20 new trains from Switzerland

The Finnish rail operator VR is buying 20 electric multiple units from the Swiss train manufacturer Stadler Rail. The trains are expected to enter service in 2026. The purchase contract includes the option to order another 50 trains as well as maintenance work.

The new commuter trains are 50% more energy efficient than VR's existing trains. The interior can be reconfigured as required; the number of bicycle stands can be increased in the summer.

VR has already had good experience with Stadler in the local transport network in Helsinki. There, the trains were already put into operation in 2009.

More on the purchase of the new trains of VR.
