Finnair strengthens connectivity between Helsinki, Ivalo, and Kirkenes in Northern Norway

Finnair announces its strategic expansion into the Arctic region with the introduction of a new route connecting Helsinki, Ivalo, and the picturesque town of Kirkenes in Norway. The launch is scheduled for summer 2025. The innovative route aims to enhance connectivity for Finnish and international travelers seeking to explore the captivating landscapes of Lapland and Northern Norway.

With Kirkenes as Finnair's northernmost destination, the airline plans to offer three weekly flights, providing a seamless travel experience for passengers on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The service will utilize Finnair's 68-seater ATR propeller aircraft, renowned for efficiency and comfort on interregional routes within Finland, as well as to destinations in the Nordic countries and the Baltics.

Ole Orvér, Chief Commercial Officer at Finnair, expressed excitement about the expansion, stating, "We are delighted to introduce a destination that further strengthens our already extensive network in the Arctic region. The new route enables a smooth connection for customers traveling to Northern Norway, making it fast and easy to reach the destination from Helsinki."

Finnair's new route caters to diverse travel preferences

The decision to introduce the Helsinki-Ivalo-Kirkenes route underscores Finnair's efforts to meet the growing demand for Arctic travel experiences, especially during the winter season. With increasing international tourism in Lapland, fueled by attractions such as the Saariselkä ski resort, the integration of Kirkenes into Finnair's network will cater to various travel preferences, including exploring the Barents Sea coast and the famous King Crab experience.

It's interesting to note that Finnair's connection to Kirkenes dates back to the 1960s and early 1970s when the airline operated a route from Helsinki via Ivalo to Kirkenes. This historical continuity emphasizes the significance of this new initiative in revisiting past routes and strengthening regional connectivity.
