Estonia tops international environmental rankings
Estonia, the most north-eastern of the Baltic states, has claimed the top spot in this year's Environmental Performance Index (EPI). The EPI, compiled annually by the Yale University Center for Environmental Law & Policy, evaluates the environmental performance of 180 countries based on 32 indicators. These include air quality, drinking water cleanliness, fish stock health, and wetland management.
Sustainability as a way of life
“This result once again highlights that sustainability in Estonia is not just a passing trend but deeply embedded in the country's way of life,” states Visit Estonia proudly. The number one spot in the EPI ranking is the result of various sustainable strategies and initiatives consistently implemented across Estonia. Noteworthy progress has been made in renewable energy, waste and water management, as well as forest and nature conservation. Eco-friendly agriculture also plays a significant role in this achievement.
Tallinn and Tartu as key contributors
According to Visit Estonia, two cities have been particularly instrumental in the country’s sustainable development: Tallinn, named "Green EU Capital 2023," and Tartu, this year’s European Capital of Culture. Both cities have adopted innovative concepts, such as smart public transportation systems and numerous sustainable accommodation options. In addition to their sustainability efforts, Estonia offers a rich cultural program.
A highlight is the “Tallinn Fringe Festival,” running until September 18. Visitors can enjoy over 200 performances, including theater, comedy, burlesque, and music, featuring both local and international artists. The festival also provides an opportunity to explore the city's diverse cultural venues.
Nature and adventure for travelers
Estonia impresses not only with its cultural and sustainability initiatives but also with its untouched natural landscapes. Dense forests, mysterious marshlands, expansive coastlines, and pristine islands define the country's scenery. According to tourism promoters, the six national parks offer a “unique combination” of nature experiences, adventure, and diverse wildlife, including bears, elk, seals, and numerous bird species.
Estonia exemplifies how environmental protection, culture, and nature experiences can be successfully integrated—offering many opportunities for both travelers and the travel industry.
