Denmark’s capital named most liveable city in the world – Vienna and Zurich share second place
For the first time, Copenhagen has claimed the number one position in the prestigious “Liveability Index” by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), overtaking Vienna, which had held the title for three consecutive years. The annual report evaluates quality of life in 173 cities worldwide based on factors like stability, healthcare, education, culture, and infrastructure.
Urban lifestyle meets Scandinavian efficiency
Copenhagen impresses with an outstanding combination of safety, modern infrastructure, and a forward-thinking education system. It achieved top scores in three key categories: stability, education, and infrastructure. The city's strong focus on sustainability, efficient public services, and compact layout make it a model for modern urban living.
Vienna and Zurich in second place
After three years at the top, Vienna slips to second place—now tied with Zurich. The decline is largely due to a lower rating for stability, following incidents such as the bomb threat at a Taylor Swift concert last summer. Zurich remains stable and continues to demonstrate Switzerland’s reputation for exceptional quality of life.
A boost for tourism and destination branding
This new ranking puts Copenhagen even more firmly in the international spotlight—not just as a highly liveable city, but also as an attractive destination for city travellers, digital nomads, and business professionals. The result confirms Denmark’s standing as a leading Nordic destination: urban, sustainable, and welcoming.
