Spectacular New Attraction in Eastern Iceland

The “Baugur Bjólfs” observation deck has opened above the coastal town of Seyðisfjörður. At an altitude of about 650 meters, the circular structure offers a 360-degree view of the 16-kilometer-long fjord, the surrounding mountain landscape, and the Atlantic Ocean.

An Architectural Flagship Project

The architecture itself is part of the experience: The 32-meter-wide, gently sloping platform juts partially out over the precipice, giving the impression of floating above the landscape. A continuous bench and the accessible design make the viewpoint accessible to a wide range of visitors.

The history of the site has also been integrated into the concept. The ring-shaped design is reminiscent of the silver ring of the Viking Bjólfur, after whom the mountain is named. According to legend, Bjólfur was one of the first settlers of Seyðisfjörður.

Off the Beaten Path

For the region’s tourism development, the new viewpoint thus offers another attractive visitor experience off the beaten path of Iceland’s well-known highlights. Access is via a gravel road; it’s about 1.2 kilometers from the main parking lot to the platform. Due to changeable weather and road conditions, it’s recommended to check the current conditions before traveling.

Why we are watching this

This new attraction reflects the development of tourism in East Iceland and the opening up of lesser-known regions.
