Company scales up bio-LNG to offer passengers and cargo a fully emission-free option

Viking Line is taking a major leap towards sustainable maritime transport. Starting autumn 2025, the company will increase its use of renewable biogas (bio-LNG) sixfold. For the first time, passengers and cargo customers can opt for a completely fossil-free journey across all routes.

Significant increase in bio-LNG use

The volume of biogas purchased now equals the annual fuel consumption of Viking Glory on the Turku–Stockholm route. Viking Grace will also run on bio-LNG, supported by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Both fuels emit virtually no sulphur or particulates, while biogas made from food and agricultural waste supports a circular economy.

Passengers can choose fossil-free travel

With the expansion of biofuel, Viking Line enables customers to actively reduce emissions. For an additional fee, travellers, conference guests, and cargo clients can book their trip entirely fossil-free. Demand is strong: a recent EPSI Rating survey found that 45% of Finnish respondents plan to make more sustainable travel choices in the future.

Driving green corridors in the Baltic Sea

Beyond its biogas investment, Viking Line is involved in developing climate-neutral shipping routes – so-called green corridors – between Turku–Stockholm and Helsinki–Tallinn. Earlier this summer, the company also presented plans for a fully electric passenger car ferry on the Helsinki–Tallinn route, scheduled for the 2030s.

“We want to be among the pioneers in steering Finnish maritime transport towards a fossil-free future,” says Viking Line CEO Jan Hanses. “Such large-scale investments require predictability and strong collaboration across the maritime cluster and with public stakeholders.”
