What this means for low-emission travel in the Nordics

Ferry operator Viking Line has confirmed that it will maintain a high share of renewable biogas throughout 2026. Following a significant increase in biofuel use last year, the company has secured continued access to biogas for its operations on the Turku–Stockholm route.

Used in combination with LNG, the fuel mix results in very low sulphur and particle emissions and a substantially reduced climate footprint. In the previous year alone, greenhouse gas emissions on the route were reduced by approximately 50,000 tonnes.

Rather than a sustainability pledge, this development represents operational proof that low-emission maritime transport can function at scale.

For tour operators and buyers, this signals growing availability of credible low-emission travel options, increasing relevance of transport emissions in purchasing decisions and a shift from future roadmaps to measurable impact.

In the Baltic Sea region, sustainable shipping is moving from ambition to practice, a trend likely to influence how Nordic travel products are positioned going forward.
