Regional collaboration drives improved access to Swedish Lapland

From 25 October, SAS will significantly expand its services to Kiruna as part of its winter schedule. In addition to increasing flight frequencies, the airline is reintroducing an overnight stop – a move that will noticeably improve accessibility to the region. The development is not solely driven by the airline, but by a coordinated effort among regional stakeholders.

New flight schedule enables flexible travel options

The updated timetable includes an early morning departure from Kiruna to Stockholm and a late evening return flight. This makes same-day travel between the two cities possible again. For international travelers, this means greater flexibility. Kiruna can now be integrated more easily into travel programs without requiring additional overnight stays.

Improved international access via Copenhagen

At the same time, SAS is increasing the number of flights between Copenhagen and Kiruna. During the peak winter season, frequencies will rise from two to three weekly departures. As Copenhagen serves as a major international hub with connections to Europe, North America and Asia, this expansion significantly improves global access to Swedish Lapland.

Result of targeted regional cooperation

The return of the overnight stop is the outcome of a joint initiative launched in 2025. A working group consisting of tourism organizations, local businesses and infrastructure stakeholders – including Arctic Sweden Visitors Board, Kiruna Lapland and Swedavia – worked towards improving regional accessibility. The goal was clear: to strengthen connectivity for both visitors and local industries.

Infrastructure and staffing as key enablers

A crucial factor in enabling the expanded flight operations was the strengthening of airport staffing. Like many destinations, Kiruna Airport faced challenges in recruiting qualified personnel. Through targeted hiring and close collaboration between the airport operator and airlines, these challenges were gradually addressed, paving the way for increased traffic.

Growing demand supports expansion

The rising importance of the region is also reflected in recent figures. Kiruna Airport recorded its highest-ever passenger numbers in December and January during the past winter season. This underlines the growing international demand for winter destinations in northern Sweden.

The improved connectivity opens up new opportunities for product development. Short breaks, city-nature combinations and more efficient itineraries become easier to design and sell. At the same time, this development highlights how strategic cooperation and infrastructure investment can directly enhance a destination’s international competitiveness.
