Extensive renovation and new ice exhibition on the theme of the underwater world improve the visitor experience in the SnowVillage

Lapland Hotels SnowVillage, located in Lainio, Kittilä, near the Ylläs ski resort, returns this winter for its 23rd season and presents an exciting new theme: Underwater World.

This year's exhibition showcases the diversity of marine life. The area will be significantly expanded with a major renovation that will triple the space. The popular attraction will be open to the public again from 25 December 2024.

Underwater wonders in the ice

The upcoming season promises a stunning ice display, bringing the ocean's depths to life. Visitors can explore sculptures featuring whales, turtles, seahorses, and octopuses, each expertly crafted in snow and ice. A unique aspect of this year’s theme is the representation of the human impact on underwater ecosystems, encouraging visitors to think about the importance of preserving marine biodiversity.

“We’ve explored a variety of themes before, but this year we wanted to delve below the surface,” says Tomi Kurtakko, Technical Manager. “Our goal is to inspire people to make environmentally responsible choices that protect water and its rich biodiversity.”

New event space and expansion

Construction of SnowVillage’s Arctic world will begin in November, weather permitting. Alongside the main ice exhibition, a new event space crafted entirely from snow and ice will be introduced. Known as "Valhaan Laulu" in the local Meänkieli language, this venue will feature an underwater motif, complete with whale songs, making it an ideal location for weddings and other ceremonies.

The venue itself will more than triple in size following a large-scale renovation. The redesign, which began in April and is scheduled for completion by the end of October, has transformed all existing facilities, including the reception area and the Log Restaurant Krouvi.

New highlights for the growing number of visitors

A new 100-seat heated glass restaurant will also open, offering guests a warm place to relax and enjoy a meal. A new double suite offers luxurious accommodation.

"We needed more warm, comfortable rooms to accommodate our growing number of visitors," explains Maria Astrén, SnowVillage manager. "These improvements offer our guests better opportunities to warm up, enjoy food and experience the ice exhibition."

Last season, around 80,000 people visited the SnowVillage, and this year's improvements are expected to lead to a further increase in visitor numbers.

Lapland Hotels SnowVillage opens its doors on 25 December 2024 and will be open daily from 10am to 10pm until 6 April 2025. Thanks to the expanded facilities and stunning underwater ice sculptures, this season promises to be one of the most exciting yet.
