Strongest tourism summer ever shows sustainable growth
Sweden’s summer of 2025 was the strongest tourism season in history. According to new accommodation statistics from Tillväxtverket, commercial accommodations recorded 30.8 million overnight stays between June and August – an increase of 3.4 percent compared to the previous year.
International markets drive the growth
The number of international overnight stays rose by 8.8 percent to over 9.3 million, while domestic stays increased by 3.5 percent to 21.1 million. Since 2015, Sweden’s summer overnight stays have grown by about 14 percent.
Top source markets in summer 2025:
- Germany +6,6 %
- USA: +15 %
- Netherlands: +13,4 %
- Norway: +2,6 %
- Belgium: +37,4 %
No sign of overtourism
Despite record growth, Sweden shows no signs of overtourism. Tillväxtverket reports a bed occupancy rate of 51.5 percent, meaning that every second bed remained unused during the summer months. Tourism growth continues to be balanced and sustainable, both seasonally and regionally.
Strongest growth in central and northern regions
Regions with the highest growth were Västernorrland (+11.6 %), Gävleborg (+9.2 %), Västerbotten (+7 %), Jämtland (+6 %), and Värmland (+5.8 %). Only Norrbotten recorded a slight decline (–1.4 %) compared to 2024.
